In Case You're Wondering
The chura ceremony is the morning the bride gifted a set of red and ivory bangles by her mama (maternal uncle), traditionally at dawn on the wedding day or the evening before. The chura is soaked in milk and water in a bowl beforehand and kept covered. The bride is not meant to see the bangles, that's why they're covered with a chura cover as soon as she wears them. Her sisters and cousins then tie the kaleere, and shake them over the heads of the unmarried girls in the room.
The mama, the bride's maternal uncle along with the mami. The bangles are never bought by the bride herself; they must be gifted, and that is the whole meaning of them. Where the mama cannot be present, a close maternal relative takes the role, and the ceremony loses nothing. The kaleere are separate: those are tied by her sisters, her cousins and her closest friends.
The cover keeps the bangles hidden from the bride until her mama lifts it during the rasam — the surprise is part of the ritual, not packaging. The thaal and its bowl are used the night before or that morning to soak the chura in milk and water before it is placed on her wrists.
