The morning the whole family holds its breath.

Before the lehenga, before the makeup, before the world arrives — there is a quiet moment in the bride's home. Her mama, her mother's brother, lifts the chura from its box and slides the red and ivory bangles onto her wrists. This is the Chura ceremony.

Her eyes are often closed — tradition says she should not see the chura until the wedding. So she feels it instead: the cool of the bangles, the hands of the uncle who has known her since she was small, the weight of becoming a bride settling onto her arms.

Then come the kaleere — the golden, dangling ornaments her sisters and friends shake over the heads of the unmarried girls, laughing, blessing them to be next. It is the most tender morning of the whole wedding.
