The Sahe Chithi is the formal wedding letter that carries the invitation of the wedding from the bride's side to the groom's side. It is written on a scroll, marked with saffron, and sent to the groom's family alongside mithai, dry fruits and shagun.
In most Punjabi families the bride's family sends the Sahe Chithi to the groom's family, carried in earlier generations by the family nai, and today by the vichola or a trusted elder, along with bride's parents. It is typically sent 1 to 3 months before the wedding. Customs vary from family to family, and many households now mark the day together.
The scroll itself, presented in a decorated palki or box, along with mithai, dry fruits, a coconut, shagun envelopes and, in many families, a suit for the groom's mother. The scroll is the ceremony. Everything sent with it is the blessing.
Each set pairs a handcrafted palki; the small decorated palanquin the letter travels in with a screen-printed fabric scroll, Mithai Box, and Shagun Envelope.
