Long before the cards, the venues and the guest lists, there is a smaller, quieter moment. The two families sit together, sweets are passed, and a word is given. The Roka — the first official yes.

It is called Roka because, from this day, the search is stopped. No other matches, no other maybes. The families have chosen each other, and they seal it the way Indian families always have: with shagun, with mithai, with gifts carried from one home to the other.

For NRI families, the Roka is often the first time two sides truly meet — sometimes in person, sometimes across a screen and an ocean. Either way, the gesture is the same: we are saying yes, and we are saying it with our hands full.
